The free companion
Put the book to work on one real task.
From Archivist to Architect: A Practitioner's Field Guide to Building Better Information Systems, by Mr. Jovan Smith, explains the architecture and the reasoning. Breadcrumbs is its free companion: checklists, templates, skills, workflow guides and prompts you can copy and adapt. You do not need to buy the book to use anything here.
Free, MIT-licensed. No account required. Copy the files into a repository you own.
Choose your path
Two ways in.
I am reading the book
Apply it with free resources. Pick one recurring task, write down the problem, then copy the resource that fits.
- Checklists for pre-push checks, pull requests and drift sweeps
- Templates for progress notes, decisions and rules files
- Skills, paste-able rule sets for your own rules file
The book gives the architecture and the reasons. These files give you a place to start.
I want the memory method
Explore how short, scoped notes keep work moving between sessions, then try a small example.
The reasoning is in the working paper.
The method in plain words
Cue-placement memory.
Keep short notes in files you own. Each note points to a decision, a source or the current next step, instead of retelling the whole story. A new session reads the note and follows the pointers.
The tool has to be told to read the notes. Writing a file does not create automatic memory, and a plausible answer is not proof the file was read.
An example: where we left off
Task: Update the volunteer sign-up guide.
Status: Draft is in docs/signup-guide.md. Nobody has reviewed it.
Decision: Use the shared form, not email. Reason and source: docs/decisions.md, entry 3.
Next step: Check steps 1 to 4 against the live form, then ask a second person to review.
Check it in a fresh session
- Open a new session with this project folder selected.
- Ask it to read the note and tell you the task, the evidence for its status, what is uncertain and the next step, citing the file and section for each.
- Compare the answer with your note. If it guesses or calls unfinished work done, fix the note and ask again.
